Live from the courtroom: When Dale Hausner was arrested at about midnight on Aug. 4, 2006, he thought it was because he had just bought a large amount of methamphetamine, he testified in his eight-count murder trial this afternoon. “I just purchaced a big buy of methamphetamine from Ron Horton, and I thought I had gotten caught up in it,” Hausner testified.
“I had no idea it was about the Serial Shooter case,” he said.
Hausner said he was washing soy milk out of his daughter’s baby bottles when SWAT team officers busted into his apartment. He was wearing nothing but a pair of swim trunks at the time. He was later questioned by Phoenix police detective Clark Schwartzkopf and told he was a suspect in the Serial Shooter killing spree.
“I absolutely was dumbfounded,” Hausner testified. “I thought it was a joke. I almost thought it was one of those hidden camera, oh we got you, sort of things.”
In custody, Hausner said the police lied to him frequently, calling him names and refusing to provide him with a blanket to keep warm or an attorney.
